What you need to know about the Federation of Master Builders

If you’re looking to hire a builder for any home improvement job in the near future, then it’s well worth knowing all about the Federation of Master Builders. Founded over 60 years ago, this organisation acts as the trading body for the industry, ensuring competency of builders and tradesmen.

Essentially, the FMB promotes professionalism and high quality workmanship. So if a company is registered with FMB, you know they have met the criteria and will feel safer for hiring their services.

By choosing an FMB company there are a number of things you can expect. First of all you’ll get a quote for the work you want completed, with a full breakdown of the agreement you’ll enter with the builder. Included will be start dates, duration and details of warranties.

It’s important to have this agreement in place, because it acts as protection for you in case there are any disputes later down the line. Some builders will have day rates, whilst others will have a rate for the full project.

An FMB builder will also be expected to leave your home clean and tidy once the work has been completed and all instructions and guarantees will be provided. A date could also be agreed for the builder to return and touch up anything as required later on.

Is it a legal requirement for a builder to be registered to FMB?

In simple terms, no it’s not. That’s why it’s up to you to perform your own checks and ensure you fully trust the builder. It makes sense to choose an FMB company as you’ll have some level of security and trust.

What’s important to remember though is that even if a builder isn’t registered, it doesn’t mean they’re not reputable or provide poor workmanship. The FMB is only there to help you and provide protection.

We would advise you to use a company registered to the FMB as you’ll be more informed on what to expect and can make sure everything runs smoothly throughout the project.
